Memorial Service for Marcia's Sister Ellen

I returned from Santa Ana last week after the funeral of my dear sister, Ellen. It was good to be back amongst the trees, to hear the sound of the creek behind my house, to reconnect with friends. I slowly began to return to my 'normal' life that had been shattered over the past six months during my sister's fight against cancer. But I was only partially present. I felt that I was leading parallel lives, one here in the mountains among the familiar and one rooted in the raw grief of my loss.
Last night, a group of friends from the Mountain Jewish Community gathered at my home to express their condolances and share my grief. Arriving with food and flowers in hand, some driving straight from work, others from Fresno, from Mariposa, Ahwahnee, North Fork, Coarsegold, Oakhurst, they participated in an evening service, heard the mourner's Kaddish, and listened to my stories about my sister.
Thank you Susie for a tender and lovely service. Thank you Barbara for the music. Thank you Edith and Jerry for driving straight here from San Francisco. Thank you everyone for your love and support. It has meant a great deal to me during this difficult transition period.
